At Accelerate Rehab, we understand that recovery from severe trauma is rarely straightforward. It is a journey that requires patience, resilience, determination, and a dedicated multidisciplinary team.

Recently, our client Nader reached an important milestone in his recovery journey, undergoing surgery to remove the hardware that had been inserted following multiple traumatic injuries sustained in a workplace accident.

The Road So Far

Nader suffered extensive injuries affecting multiple areas of his body, including:

  • Left distal radius fracture requiring surgical fixation

  • Pelvic fractures and pubic diastasis

  • Sacral fracture

  • Left calcaneal (heel bone) fracture

  • Lumbar and thoracic spinal fractures

  • Ongoing lower back, pelvic and foot pain

To stabilise these injuries and facilitate healing, surgeons inserted various plates and screws throughout the affected regions. These implants played a critical role in maintaining alignment and promoting bone healing during the early stages of recovery.

Why Remove Orthopaedic Hardware?

Once sufficient healing has occurred, surgeons may recommend the removal of plates and screws if they are causing symptoms or if they are no longer required.

Hardware removal can help:

✓ Improve comfort during daily activities

✓ Reduce irritation or pain caused by prominent implants

✓ Improve mobility and movement quality

✓ Facilitate progression of rehabilitation

✓ Allow patients to regain confidence in movement

For Nader, the decision to remove the hardware represented a positive step forward and an indication that healing has progressed significantly.

The Next Phase of Rehabilitation

Although hardware removal marks a major achievement, rehabilitation does not stop here.

The next phase of Nader's rehabilitation will focus on:

  • Gradual restoration of mobility

  • Progressive strengthening

  • Improving walking tolerance and endurance

  • Balance and proprioceptive retraining

  • Functional capacity development

  • Preparation for return to work activities

Recovery following multiple traumatic injuries is often a marathon rather than a sprint. There will continue to be challenges along the way, however each milestone reached is worth celebrating.

Celebrating Progress

At Accelerate Rehab, we are incredibly proud of Nader's commitment and determination throughout his recovery journey. His perseverance serves as a reminder that meaningful recovery is possible, even after significant trauma.

We look forward to continuing to support Nader through the next chapter of his rehabilitation and helping him achieve his long term goals.

Every step forward, no matter how small, is still progress.
